Sometimes it’s hard shopping for heels, because there are just so many to choose from. But when you’re building your wardrobe, especially if you’re transitioning into a more professional wardrobe, I think there are 4 essential heels you need: a classic black pump, a nude heel, a patterned or printed heel, and for fun, a heel with a pop of color. Heels are also good to have during the holiday season, when you’re more likely to dress up for different occasions, dinners, and parties.
When it comes to heels, it’s also important to know what heel height is right for you. If you aren’t a heel wearer, I would stick with a lower heel for comfort (and to make sure you aren’t twisting your ankles!). However, if you’re a devotee to walking around 2+ inches taller than you really are on a normal basis, going with a higher heel height can work for you. Typically, I stick with heels between 3-3 ¾ inches in height. Once you hit 4 inches, the incline can start to be a bit uncomfortable if you’re on your feet for a long period of time.
A Classic Black Pump
This heel is the immediate go-to for pretty much any outfit and occasion. If you were to only have 1 pair of heels, they should be black. My classic black pump is a patent leather pump by BCBGeneration. It’s an older style, but you can find simple black heel options here, and here.
A Nude Heel
Nude heels are great for dressing outfits in the spring, when you’re more likely to wear lighter colors. They are also more favored when it comes to weddings, etc., so having a pair of these on hand (or foot, I’m so funny!) is always nice. My nude heel is by Bandolino with a heel that mimics a wooden stacked heel and a fake snakeskin pattern look to it. Other good nude heel options can be found here, and here.
A Patterned or Printed Heel
A patterned or printed heel is great for outfits that are more simplistic, such as a little black dress, or black pants with a simple white button down. They add a bit of character to an otherwise understated outfit. My printed heel is the Maddie Heel in Speckle from Madewell and is made of calf half and suede, with a leather lining. If you want a different print or pattern, try here or here.
A Colored Heel
Having a colored heel works the same way having a printed or patterned heel does: it adds character to a simple outfit. It can also be paired with patterns, or other colors, to add depth to an outfit. And sometimes it’s nice to accessorize a little black dress with a pop of color! My colored heel is also from Madewell: the Mira Heel in Bright Flame. This heel is suede with a leather lining. Want a different pop of color? Try here, here, and here.
