What’s in my Closet: Embroidered Shiftdress

Guys!  It’s June!!!  How has the time gone by?!  I apologize for being completely off the grid this past week.  I was out of town for a wedding and we made a short trip to NYC after and once I got back home, readjusting to my usual schedule was harder than I thought.  But, I’m back now, so get excited! 🙂  Moving right along…

I really love an easy dress, and this one is probably going to be my favorite dress through the summer.

stitchtake1  It’s always great when you find a dress that you can just throw on and feel comfortable in, but this one takes it a step further with it’s delicate embroidered details and pockets!stitchtake4

It’s very easy to pair this piece with any type of shoe.  While I was in Philly, I went from wearing my Birkenstocks during the day time, to wearing strappy heels with it during the night.
stitchtake3I’m almost always wearing this delicate Gorjana necklace, but this dress doesn’t even need a layering piece because it’s detailed enough to stand alone.

What’s in My Closet: Prints and Color

cincoOOTD3Since yesterday was Cinco De Mayo, I decided I wanted to wear some of the more colorful pieces in my closet.cincoOOTD7 When I think of Cinco De Mayo, I think of busy and bold prints, as well as all things colorful.  cincoOOTD6It was over 80 degrees here yesterday (and it is today too…it feels like summer!), so I wore shorts, and one of my more printed, colorful top options.cincoOOTD5

(And if this is what May feels like, I’m a bit concerned for what it’s gonna feel like here in the middle of July.)cincoOOTD4

I was off work yesterday, so I wanted to dress comfortably for all the errands I needed to run, but still somewhat reflecting on the festivities of the day!cincoOOTD2

[Shop this post: Collective Concepts top, old, something kinda similar that I really like here.  J. Crew shorts, old, same ones for this year here, in many color options!  Birks here.]cincoOOTD1

Spring Fashion on a Day That Feels Like Winter

Sometimes the weather just doesn’t match the season.  And when that happens, it’s hard to figure out what to wear, because you want to wear all those new seasonal clothes, but the temperature outside just doesn’t allow for it.
2015-03-20 05.36.47

I like pairing my warmer and brighter pieces to match the spring season, while still staying warm when it feels a bit nippy outside.2015-03-20 05.37.11

Wearing my bright scarf, keeps me warm in the less than desirable temperature, but still adds spring color.2015-03-20 05.38.46

Bows and Arrows,

What’s in my Closet: Flares

Yesterday, it was actually warm outside.  Well, warmish.  It was comfortable enough to walk outside without a jacket, so I took full advantage of that.  Unfortunately, today the weather matches the still melting ice/snow outside, so I have to bundle up again. Sigh.  At least it’s less than one month til spring.flares4

I’m so glad flares are back in style.  I’m 5’4″ and flares give me the look of having legs for days, even though I don’t.flares5

It’s definitely a change from the typical skinny jeans everyone is wearing, and I love it.flares1

What’s in my Closet: Distressed Denim

Last year at this time, it had already snowed once in Raleigh, and we were gearing up for what everyone called the “snowpocalypse” that happened in the second week of February. This year however, we keep going from really cold days, to days where we reach the mid-50s to low-60s. While this isn’t the warmest weather, it’s definitely allowed for me to break out the distressed denim and not feel like my knees are completely frozen.distressed1 distressed3 distressed9distressed5distressed7distressed6distressed8

How are you styling your distressed denim?

What’s in my Closet: Pixie Pants

2014-11-24 09.12.00

Once it starts getting cold outside around these parts, my Pixie pants are unearthed from the bottom of what’s otherwise known as my denim drawer, and placed near the front for easy reach. I own 3 pairs: two pairs of black and one pair of gray. It’s that serious, you guys.

2014-11-24 09.01.37

If you want a pair of leggings, but in a thicker, more put together form, these are for you. It’s kind of like a hybrid between leggings and dress pants. The zipper in the back makes your outfit look extremely put together (if you’re wearing a shirt short enough to show the zipper), and the material is a stretch ponte fabric that stays in place and feels so much more structured than typical knit leggings.2014-11-24 09.04.50

They are seriously my go to pant during the colder months because they are so easy to wear with all styles of shoes, can be dressed up or down in a flash, and are much warmer than leggings. It’s also the way to go when having to dress up for that holiday party, but you just aren’t feeling a dress or skirt with tights because you’re a wimp like me and don’t want to be shivering the entire time.2014-11-24 09.02.25

If you don’t own a pair of these guys, you really should go out and splurge on yourself and get a pair [click here!]. And just in time for the holidays! You’ll be amazed how much you pull them out of your closet to wear, and you’ll soon ask yourself, “How did I ever live without these?!”2014-11-23 20.24.12

And if you aren’t willing to take the plunge on the price, Old Navy has a similar pair here.

Do you own a pair already? Tell me what you think!

Bows and Arrows,

What’s in my Closet: Heels

2014-11-06 22.25.54Sometimes it’s hard shopping for heels, because there are just so many to choose from. But when you’re building your wardrobe, especially if you’re transitioning into a more professional wardrobe, I think there are 4 essential heels you need: a classic black pump, a nude heel, a patterned or printed heel, and for fun, a heel with a pop of color. Heels are also good to have during the holiday season, when you’re more likely to dress up for different occasions, dinners, and parties.

2014-11-06 20.13.39When it comes to heels, it’s also important to know what heel height is right for you. If you aren’t a heel wearer, I would stick with a lower heel for comfort (and to make sure you aren’t twisting your ankles!). However, if you’re a devotee to walking around 2+ inches taller than you really are on a normal basis, going with a higher heel height can work for you. Typically, I stick with heels between 3-3 ¾ inches in height. Once you hit 4 inches, the incline can start to be a bit uncomfortable if you’re on your feet for a long period of time.

A Classic Black Pump

2014-11-06 20.04.46

This heel is the immediate go-to for pretty much any outfit and occasion. If you were to only have 1 pair of heels, they should be black. My classic black pump is a patent leather pump by BCBGeneration. It’s an older style, but you can find simple black heel options here, and here.

A Nude Heel

2014-11-06 20.02.00

Nude heels are great for dressing outfits in the spring, when you’re more likely to wear lighter colors. They are also more favored when it comes to weddings, etc., so having a pair of these on hand (or foot, I’m so funny!) is always nice. My nude heel is by Bandolino with a heel that mimics a wooden stacked heel and a fake snakeskin pattern look to it. Other good nude heel options can be found here, and here.

A Patterned or Printed Heel

2014-11-06 20.07.35

A patterned or printed heel is great for outfits that are more simplistic, such as a little black dress, or black pants with a simple white button down. They add a bit of character to an otherwise understated outfit. My printed heel is the Maddie Heel in Speckle from Madewell and is made of calf half and suede, with a leather lining. If you want a different print or pattern, try here or here.

A Colored Heel

2014-11-06 20.00.48

Having a colored heel works the same way having a printed or patterned heel does: it adds character to a simple outfit. It can also be paired with patterns, or other colors, to add depth to an outfit. And sometimes it’s nice to accessorize a little black dress with a pop of color! My colored heel is also from Madewell: the Mira Heel in Bright Flame. This heel is suede with a leather lining. Want a different pop of color? Try herehere, and here.

What’s in my Closet: Floppy Fall Hat

2014-09-23 08.35.21Happy Fall! Since the official start of fall (down to the minute), was last night at 10:29pm according to Mr. Roker on the Today Show, I thought I’d showcase one of my newest fall fashion pieces to celebrate the first full day of fall!2014-09-23 08.27.58

I’ve been searching for a while for the perfect floppy wool hat for my tiny head, and I finally found this one at Uniquities in Cameron Village. It’s by David & Young.2014-09-22 12.02.57

Floppy felt/wool hats are a great way to add a fall element to an outfit that might not necessarily feel very fall-like!

2014-09-22 11.59.18

If you would like a hat like this, you can still find this one at Uniquities, or you can try this one, this one, or this one!

Have an awesome first full day of fall!

Bows and Arrows,

What’s in my Closet: Coated Denim

2014-08-30 08.28.14I truly think these are a must-have for fall fashion, and I have no clue how I’ve gone years without owning a pair of these up until last year. I think many women see them and think “that’s not my style,” and I know I fell into that belief before I got myself into a pair. But really, I don’t think it’s a style thing at all. I think it’s more of a ‘I’m scared of possibly being noticed’ thing. But what do I know!

Everyone loves denim and everyone wears denim, so why can’t everyone love coated denim, and wear coated denim too! Just sub out your everyday dark wash or black denim with coated denim and keep everything else the same! They really aren’t hard to work into outfits at all! In fact, they take the typical t-shirt and jeans outfit up a notch! They are also a great alternative to the leather legging look without the price tag of leather. If you don’t own a pair of coated denim, but you want to, I would recommend sticking with a basic black pair before buying coated denim in other colors. Mine are a bit more edgy with the pin-tuck panels at the knees. 2014-08-24 09.21.51

Want some like mine? Find them here.

Want a more simplistic pair to start off? Find those here, here, and here.

And if you aren’t sure how to take care of them once you have them, check out this video from Popsugar and they’ll let you know how!

Do you have coated denim already? If so, how do you wear yours?!

Bows and arrows,

What’s in my Closet: Casual Sneakers (Converse & Vans)

Causal kicks are a must-have in everyone’s closet! They go with almost any outfit and are a great way to dress down a skirt or dress, or a quick and comfortable go-to for weekend-wear with your favorite skinny jeans or boyfriend jeans. They are also shoes you can wear in any season, unlike sandals.

2014-08-18 12.09.52

If you own, or have ever owned Toms, then any of the outfits you wore with those works just as well with low-top Converses or slip-on Vans! These shoes are also insanely comfortable! They only take about a day to break in (if that!) and you can wear them all day without feeling like your compromising your comfort for fashion.

Both of these brands also have a ton of options to choose from, so you could go for the basic everyday pair that works with everything, or you could opt for the more unique, colorful, or patterned pair that make the outfit stand out! It’s up to you!

I own two pairs from each brand:

Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star Sneaker in White w/ pastel tongues (I don’t think they make these specific ones anymore, so I’m sorry there’s no link for them, but try these instead)

2014-08-18 11.49.36

Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star Sneaker in Navy Blue/White (you can find these here)

2014-08-18 11.50.21

Canvas Authentic Lo Pro Vans in Black/White (found here)

2014-08-18 12.10.47

Vans Classic Slip-ons in Perforated Leather in True Black (found here or here)

I will also say that both of these brands hold up for years (speaking from experience), and are also priced great for their quality! They are also brands that have been around for years and years, and don’t just feel like a “trend,” because they don’t really “go out of style.” These are definitely not shoes you purchase now and get rid of next year!!! When I was in middle school, I had a pair of canvas checkered slip-on Vans and I wore those things until I had holes in the front from my feet growing…and guess what?! They are still popular in 2014!  Long story short, you can’t go wrong investing in a pair of these guys!

Important fact if you’re interested in purchasing any of these awesome shoes online:  Make sure you’re ordering the right size!!  A lot of the online retailers for both Converse and Vans offer men’s sizes when ordering (even if they are for women, because both genders love these brands!)…so double check when you’re ordering that you’ve picked the size you need.  For example, I wear a Women’s 7.5 in Vans, which means I would order a Men’s size 6 (sizing down 1.5 sizes).  And just for the sake of confusing everyone, Converse sizes actually differ by 2 sizes.  I wear a Women’s 7 in Converse, which means I would actually order a Men’s size 5.  Just be sure to double check that they haven’t already done the math for you, and that you’re getting the size you need!

Hope you enjoyed! Do you own any Converse or Vans? If so, how do you wear yours!? I’d love to know!

Bows and Arrows,
