Winter Beauty Buys: Skincare

2015-02-23 18.33.35Rounding out the last category of my winter beauty buys is skincare. These 4 products are must haves for skincare during any season, but are really important for me during the winter months.

First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser

2015-02-23 18.34.35

I use this cleanser with my Clarisonic, and it foams up really well. It may be just me, but I like to see the suds when I’m washing my face, because it satisfies my question of whether or not it’s working. This cleanser is also gentle enough on my skin and doesn’t dry me out, because we all know, no one wants products to dry their skin out during winter…we have the weather to do that for us already.

Benefit It’s Potent Eye Cream

2015-02-23 18.35.19

Even though I don’t necessarily think I need this product, or see a vast difference from using it day to day, I do think I should continue using it, now that I’m in my mid-twenties. They say you should really focus on your skincare during your twenties because, before you know it, it all goes downhill…and I don’t want that…so fighting those under-eye circles now is what I’m doing!

Mary Kay Satin Hands Fragrance-free Hand Softener

2015-02-23 18.35.56

Winter brings dry hands for me, especially when I used to be a barista. I like this Mary Kay hand softener not only because it doesn’t fight with the smell of my perfume (because it’s fragrance-free), but also because it really does leave my hands moisturized for quite some time after use. And, I only need to use the tiniest amount on my hands.

Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant

2015-02-23 18.34.07

I know this product was released not too long ago, but I had a coupon for it, so I bought a can. And now I’m addicted. I’m not a fan of the gel deodorants because they seem to get sticky with the slightest amount of sweat, and while I love the powder fresh solid bars, they aren’t the best deodorants to use when wearing a lot of black (which I do). This Dove dry spray dries almost instantly and smells really good. It doesn’t leave any residue, and is easy to use. And, by using the spray, you avoid any possible irritation that can occur when using a deodorant bar, especially after shaving. Wins all around for this product!

That completes my winter beauty buys, but don’t worry…they will be back around in less than a month with spring beauty buys! Get excited! Spring is almost here!

Lynda

Winter Beauty Buys: Scents

2015-01-27 19.17.11It’s not necessarily the first thing you think of when it comes to winter beauty purchases, but scents really do fit into seasonal categories! These are the two scents I’ve been switching between this winter, and are great must-have perfumes to use year after year.

2015-01-26 01.13.53Estée Lauder Modern Muse

While this scent is slightly floral, it also has a dark, woodsy aroma too it, that makes me think of winter warmth. I also get compliments on it when I wear it, and someone I work with even went out and bought a bottle after smelling it on me!

2015-01-26 01.14.57Calvin Klein Euphoria

This may sound weird, but personally, I think this perfume smells like men’s cologne. I know that probably makes a few of you think you’d never like to wear it yourself, but it just smells so good! I think of it as if they were making “cologne” for women, this is what it would smell like. It’s described all over the vast interwebs as a “sexy” scent, and I can totally get on board with that. If you haven’t smelled it yourself, you need to drive to your nearest Ulta/Sephora/wherever it is that you get your perfume, and smell this stuff pronto!

What perfumes or scents do you find yourself reaching for during the cold weather?

Bows and Arrows,

Lynda

Winter Beauty Buys: Lips

Winter is probably one of the harshest seasons for my lips. They are always dry and crack easily, making it hard to wear lipstick. I did find a few things that keep my lips from looking like I’ve just risen from the dead, and I thought I’d share them with all of you!

Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub– $9.952015-01-19 16.12.482015-01-19 16.13.09

When I was on the hunt for good lip scrubs, this was the one I kept hearing about. And I love it. It comes in other flavors such as mint julep, and buttered popcorn, but I am like a small child sometimes, so I had to have the bubblegum flavor! And, because it’s from Lush, it’s perfectly ok if you lick some of it off of your lips. It really does work too.

Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy by Fresh– $352015-01-19 16.41.14

I got this product in a kit over Christmas, and it’s become something that stays in my bag. It’s a smooth product that you dispense onto your finger and then apply to your lips, and it creates a barrier against the elements. I put it on my lips before I sleep at night to prevent them from drying out while I’m sleeping, and after meals before I reapply my lip balm/lip gloss, etc..

Sugar Advanced Therapy by Fresh– $252015-01-19 16.45.42

This stuff is like crack for your lips. I seriously don’t know how I go through this stuff so fast, but I do. It’s the perfect balm to put on right before any color, and it really does add an additional layer of protection against the wind and cold.

NARS Lip Gloss in Salamanca– $262015-01-19 16.24.56

This is a really high quality lip gloss that doesn’t feel sticky, yet provides a good amount of color without drying out your lips. I decided to get a vibrant pink color because I wanted to lighten up my typical dark and neutral winter wardrobe. I really do love this gloss and I’m considering getting a different color option for spring!

What are your favorite lip products for winter?

Thanks for reading,

Lynda

November Favorites

Holy cannoli, it’s December already?! I usually try to have my monthly favorites posted on the last day of the month, but November 30th really snuck up on me, so it’s going up today tonight!

  1. Orange Blossom Cloister Honey2014-11-25 16.05.13

For the past two years, I’ve been attending the annual Shopping Spree in Downtown Raleigh at the Convention Center as a start to Christmas shopping, and both years I’ve been, Cloister Honey from Charlotte has been there as a vendor. I bought honey from them both times, and without fail, they keep me wanting more. They are my favorite small business honey makers for sure. This year I purchased the Orange Blossom honey, and have been using it all month in my tea, and also on top of my pie crust cookies (the recipe I shared recently).

  1. Archer Farms Skirt Steak2014-12-01 18.23.09

This was actually in 2 WIAW posts not too long ago. It is honestly one of the easiest dinners I’ve made in a long time. I put these skirt steaks in my Crockpot with a small amount of water, turn it on low before I leave for work, and when I get home, it’s done, and ready to serve! It’s so delicious and I love how easy it is to make.  They also have about 5 flavors to choose from and my 2 favorites are Garlic and Herb and Carne Asada.

  1. Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy2014-12-01 16.04.06

For about two weeks in November, my lips were so chapped that it felt like they were constantly burning. Nothing I had at home would make the burning stop, and sometimes at night, my lips would crack open when I was sleeping (lovely image, I know). In years past, my basic chap stick options would fix this, but not this year. I discovered the Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy and began using it at morning and at night, and it worked wonders on my lips. No more super chapped lips. Yay!

  1. NARS Blush in Orgasm2014-12-01 16.07.02

Gotta love the color names of NARS products. 🙂 I’m sure every beauty guru has mentioned this product at some point or another, and if you’re even somewhat obsessed with makeup, you either already have this product, or have seriously contemplated purchasing it. I only have one other blush that I use, and it’s a matte pink shade in a bronzer/highlighter/blush palette, so I finally made the plunge, and purchased this one, and have been wearing it every day since. It really is a great basic blush for all skin tones.

  1. Hollywood Fashion Secrets Sweater Saver2014-11-14 23.09.52

I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have mentioned this thing to someone and raved about how awesome it is in the past month. Seriously. If your sweaters are pilling, go to Target or Ulta right now, and buy this bad boy. It’s a lifesaver. I mean sweater saver.

  1. Mine Chalkboard Soy Message Ceramic Candle2014-10-27 19.20.00

I got this in my October Pop Sugar Must Have box and wasn’t sure about how excited I was about the scent. Lo and behold, I’ve burned the entire candle already! So now it’s an empty chalkboard jar that I’ll probably turn into a pen holder on my desk. Who knows…DIY project to come!

  1. Madewell Sidney Boots in Pecan2014-12-01 18.31.57

I believe I purchased these boots in September, but I’ve probably chosen to wear them 3 out of 7 days of the week every week since. They are extremely comfortable if you’re on your feet all day, and they are also the perfect shaft width if you have no calf muscle whatsoever like me. The brown is also a great color as well and balances well even when wearing a lot of black.

  1. Russell + Hazel Desk Calendar2014-12-01 16.04.47 2014-12-01 16.05.04

I don’t know why I needed a new desk calendar a month and a half before the end of the year, but I did. I saw this one in The Container Store when I was shopping for Christmas presents, and I had to have it. It’s completely blank. You fill in the days, the month, and pretty much do whatever you want to it. No fancy designs or anything. Which to me, is awesome, because I love doodling and designing my own organizational calendar. There is also a section at the bottom for notes, and a section on the side with each day of the month in a “to-do” list form.

  1. Sephora Pro Precision Smudge Brush #292014-12-01 18.33.08

I needed a new eye shadow brush. I did. I needed it. Because the only other ones I have are by ELF (which for a very affordable brand, has some really good quality items), but the brushes I have from them have bristles that occasionally fall out. The brushes are also meant more for sweeping one color all over your eyelid, and not necessarily providing precision placement of shadows, and ya know, sometimes, I like putting multiple colors of shadow on my lids. This Sephora brush didn’t let me down! And it even comes with a brush cap, so it can stay safe and clean while traveling.

  1. Merrick Natural Wet Dog Food2014-11-25 16.14.41 2014-11-25 16.09.41

This one isn’t necessarily my favorite, but rather, one of Gabi’s favorites, but I’m putting it here for the world to see. The names and packaging of their wet dog food options are awesome, they are grain free, and they make little cans (which say they are for toy breeds, but really it’s just because of the size of the can) that I can feed to Gabi all at once mixed into her dry food. She’s kinda picky when it comes to wet dog food that has been sitting in the fridge. She even got a Thanksgiving Day Dinner flavor for Thanksgiving!  If you live in Raleigh, you can pick these cute little cans up at Phydeaux.

Let me know if any of you love any of these products as much as I do! And Happy December!

September Favorites

2014-09-29 23.26.03Can you believe September is already over?  I’m honestly surprised it went by so fast!  Since it’s already over, here are a few of my favorite things during the month of September.

First Aid Beauty Fab Faves To Go Kit2014-09-29 15.13.33

This kit contains three of First Aid Beauty’s most popular skincare products in travel sizes. I had never tried this brand before, until the lady at my local Urban Decay counter in Belk told me about how great it was. I bought it at the beginning of August, and I’ve gotta say, I love all three of these products. They have definitely made my face feel and look infinitely better than before I was using these three products, and the ingredients in them are also much better than other skincare products. It’s also great for sensitive skin (which I have)! I bought my kit at Belk, but this kit can also be purchased at Sephora.

Chapel Hill Toffee2014-09-29 15.10.05

I guess I’m just going to continue posting local chocolates in my monthly favorites each month! But really though, I love English toffee, and this toffee is made locally! It’s all natural, gluten free, and contains pecans and dark chocolate, and just 3 other ingredients. If I didn’t stop myself, I could eat the whole box at once. These can be found in the RTP area at Whole Foods.

David & Young Wool Floppy Hat2014-09-22 12.02.57

I was on a mission to find a floppy wool hat for fall that fit my tiny head without making me look silly, like a small child, or shorter than I am already. It took a while, but then I came across this David & Young black floppy wool hat at Uniquities in Cameron Village. I love it so much, and it was more affordable than a lot of other options I had been coming across online! It also comes in a camel color and a light gray as well. It’s definitely already become a staple accessory in my fall wardrobe (which you can see here)!

Boom Chicka Pop! Sweet & Salty Kettlecornboomchickapop

We can thank Ashley for introducing this to me! I had never heard of it until she showed it to me at Target one night, and once I tried it when I got home, I loved it. I’m not a big popcorn person, but I’ve always loved kettlecorn. This is a great snack and only contains 4 ingredients!

Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment in Cherry2014-09-29 15.09.05

So, not to confuse you, but the color is called cherry…that isn’t the flavor of this lip balm at all (and it comes in many different colors). It’s SPF 15 and provides buildable coverage. It made it into my favorites list this month because my lips have been a bit more chapped than usual, and this product is a great way to add color to chapped lips without emphasizing the fact that you actually have chapped lips (and also while moisturizing)! A great alternative to a classic red lipstick and it stays on for quite some time. The only downside is that I really wish it came in a lipstick shape, rather than a flat top to smooth on your lips…that makes it hard to apply around the philtrum…you know, that divot right under your nose!  If you want to try this product, you can find it at Sephora.

Fjallraven Kanken in Light Dusk2014-09-29 15.12.49

I love this backpack so much! It’s just the right size to fit the contents of my purse + my 15 inch Macbook Pro without getting too heavy. I think it’s the exact size that a backpack should be! Lots of backpacks are too big, which tempts you to put more into them, and that can end up causing back problems! No bueno. But with this one, you can’t shove too much in there.  If you want one like this, you can find them on Amazon.

This was a shorter list than usual, but I’m sure I’ll make up for that in October, because that’s when fall is really in full swing and I’m sure I’ll find a lot that I love then! 😀

So we can all wake up now that September has ended, and welcome in October with Pumpkin Spice Lattes, oversized sweaters, and all things fall!

Bows and Arrows,

Lynda

December Favorites

So, since it’s the last day of 2013, I decided it would be a good day to talk about some of my favorite things for the month of December.  This may be a regular trend of mine, to post my monthly favorites and discoveries, but only time will tell!  Anyways, for the month of December, here were 8 things I was loving, in no particular order! (By the way, I love making lists.)

Lynda's December Favorites

1. Vineyard Vines Holiday Tartan Plaid Shirt

Vineyard Vines Holiday Tartan Plaid Buttondown, Holiday 2013

Vineyard Vines Holiday Tartan Plaid Buttondown, Holiday 2013

I snatched up the very last one at Belk at the beginning of the month, mwahaha!  And I love it!  It’s a great holiday shirt and also works well with a lot of stuff in my wardrobe, because I’m usually wearing a lot of black, or other dark neutral solids.

2.  Openweave Wool Scarf in Plaid from Madewell

Openweave Scarf in Red Plaid from Madewell, Fall 2013

Openweave Scarf in Red Plaid from Madewell, Fall 2013

Let me just say, this was my go-to scarf of the season.  Like I just mentioned, I wear a lot of dark, neutral colors, and this was the perfect way to complete an outfit on those somewhat cold days we have here in Raleigh.  Because it’s not an infinity scarf, there were multiple ways I could wear it!

3.  Ink Meets Paper Recipe Cards from Anthropologie

Ink Meets Paper Let's Cook Recipe Cards

Ink Meets Paper Let’s Cook Recipe Cards

I purchased these while Christmas shopping from the clearance section in Anthropologie and couldn’t be happier!  I’ve been wanting to start recording all of my original recipes on paper, so when someone asks how I made something, I can give them precise directions, rather than “I add a pinch of rosemary.”  I haven’t had the time to make my own cute recipe cards, so finding these was exciting for me!

4.  Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black

I sampled this in one of the Birchboxes I received when I was subscribed to it a long time ago.  Of all the eyeliners I’ve tried in my lifetime (which I would like to think is quite a lot), this one is my favorite!  It’s liquid, but glides on like a pen instead of with a small brush.  It also stays on and in place, until you remove it with makeup remover.  I particularly like that it doesn’t wear off throughout the day, because I wear contacts, and I believe I touch my eyes, or eyelids, more than the average person.

5.  Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil Spray

Macadamia Healing Oil Spray

Macadamia Healing Oil Spray

This was a present from the precious Ashley Face for Christmas!  It’s something I’ve wanted to try for a while, and now that I have, I am happy I did.  It’s an oil, but since it’s in a spray form, you don’t have to worry about it making any particular spot in your hair look greasy.  It also tames the frizz and I find that in the dry weather, helps calm down static hair!

6.  Sharpie Pens

Various Sharpie Pens

Various Sharpie Pens

I am obsessed with these, and have been since I discovered them a while ago.  I know they came out forever ago, but once I saw all the new colors, I needed them all!  (And I still don’t have them all, but I’m working on it)  I color code my calendar and planner all the time, and these pens are what I use for that!  And what makes them even more awesome is that they stick to those sometimes-glossy calendar pages.

7.  Mark. Hand It Over Hand Cream in Pear Blossom

mark. Hand It Over Hand Cream in Pear Blossom

mark. Hand It Over Hand Cream in Pear Blossom

This little hand cream was given to me a long time ago from a customer at the coffee shop I work at, and I just rediscovered it in my pile of makeup and beauty samples.  I do not believe that Mark. carries this particular scent anymore, but they do still have hand creams!  I’ve been carrying it in my purse this month because it’s perfect for the dry weather.

8.  Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Discrete

Laura Mericer Lip Glace in Discrete

Laura Mericer Lip Glace in Discrete

I received a sample of this (not sure if it was the same color) from Sephora a few years ago from the Beauty Insider program and used the whole tube.  It is very rare that I ever use the entire tube of lip gloss, just because I seem to get tired of whatever it is that I’m using and move on to the next product before I finish the first one. (Don’t worry, I save them and use them again when I rediscover them; I’m not that wasteful.)  But I loved this stuff!  It stayed on for a long time without making my lips feel sticky like a lot of lip glosses do.  And, to me, it also smelled like vanilla, which, it wasn’t flavored, I just thought it smelled good on top of already being awesome!

So there ya go.  My list of some December favorites!  Have you tried any of these products, or are you interested in some of these items?  Feel free to let us know in the comments!

Bows and Arrows,
Lynda
